The article, "Basic Strategies in Reading Photographs" (found on moodle) goes beyond the basic of understanding what kind of photography we like to help us understand why we like what we do. Also, in order for us to better appreciate photography of either of our own work, our classmates, or anyone else's we see, we need to understand the concepts. While telling people what you see in a picture is rather easy, telling others the feeling of the picture and the skills used to create a picture is more difficult, and therefore, a better skill. This is what artists call, Formal Analysis. In order to analyze properly we need to take into consideration the composition, the content, the artists intentions, and the history of the scene.
The article goes on to describe the general vocabulary that is used in photography. I could go on to list all of these and explain them, but then it would be like me repeating the article completely. So rather, I will pick one from each category (basic vocabulary, visual elements, and composition of the photograph) and share the link with all my readers here : http://nuovo.com/southern-images/analyses.html
Landscape: a photo that displays the natural environment
Repetition: any shapes or objects that might be found repeatedly in an image and create a pattern or design
Central focus: the object or person that seems to be the main aspect of the picture and most in focus.
Question #1: What makes a good picture?
Question #2: Which one of these components is most important to you and your photography level?
Question #3: How do you think (we have we seen/we will see) these concepts develop throughout the years?
